“A key city-building principle is that public buildings, parks and open spaces should be open and accessible to all members of the public including people with disabilities”
- City of Toronto 2003

The private sector steering committee called ‘A bunch of guys’ is working to build a universal playground at Oriole Park in Toronto to provide inclusive and accessible play opportunities for all including those with physical, cognitive, and developmental/intellectual disabilities.  The groundbreaking initiative presents a unique opportunity to significantly improve Toronto’s recreational accessibility.

Neshama is working in close partnership with the Parks Forestry and Recreation Division. To date, Neshama has developed the playground vision, and guiding principles. Neshama has also initiated fundraising efforts and run initial outreach consultations with the ward councilor, local residents and community stakeholders.

Neshama will integrate a variety of play experiences and challenges to meet the play needs of children of all abilities making it universal, accessible, and inclusive.

VISION: To create an inclusive playground experience for all children that is sensitive to the community, enriching, complementary to the overall character of Oriole Park and fun for both children and adults.

OBJECTIVES: To provide opportunities for (1) creative play, (2) sensory play, (3) educational play, (4) dramatic & physical play, and (5) fun social interactions between disabled and able-bodied children.

GOAL: The fundraising target is set at $1 million for the redevelopment of the playground and related site improvements.
