Accessible play needs to be physical and non-physical. The following chart provides some examples of the unique features that Neshama Playground will provide to suit the needs of a wide range of disabilities.
 

Disability Examples of Neshama Support Mechanisms & Accessibility
Wheelchair or restricted mobility >> Accessible play elements including ramps (not steps), rubber playground surfaces and paths connecting play areas (not sand, wood chips, etc.), accessible washrooms, wheelchair parking, etc.
>> Accessible equipment and play elements (drinking fountain, clatter bridges, rope swings, etc.)

Developmental delay, learning, and developmental disabilities

>> Themed play elements and quiet rest areas
>> Dramatic and role play opportunities (stage, covered gazebo and other simple structures that encourage creativity)

Physical & dexterity disabilities

>> Themed play areas to support non-physical play
>> Artistic play
elements incorporated into landscape features (painted areas, indigenous animal footprints, etc.)
>> Graduated play opportunities (platforms of varying heights, tiered ladders, alternative routes, etc.)
>> Play elements that strengthen muscle tone, increase coordination, and improve balance

Chronic conditions

>> Chronic conditions include severe allergies, heart condition, cancer, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, autism, etc.
>> Sensory play activities, such as sensory garden with musical references (autism)
>> Graduated play opportunities- Quiet areas, break from large group play, balance activities (down syndrome)

Visually, speech and hearing impaired

>> Non-physical play areas, Braille signage, tiered play opportunities and improved lighting

Psychological disabilities

>> Quiet play areas, individual play options and seating close to play elements
>> Inclusive group play spaces and elements that encourage integrated play
>> Themed, creative and dramatic play areas encourage imaginative and fun games
